When is A Smash Not a Smash?
When its a H.B.O.
The term ‘smash’ on a high backhand overhead is a misnomer.
– the word ‘smash’ implies power to the point of breakage
– the word smash also gives the impression that you are giving something… well, you’re giving something an almighty smash.
With a full overhead throwing action, the shot can live up to the terminology – a thown racket head fuels the hardest shots in tennis – it truly is (or can be) a smash, as seen in this side-view of the Pete Sampras overhead (which also includes two free-running animations in 9 & 10).
