The Net Game – 015

When is A Smash Not a Smash?

When its a H.B.O.

The term ‘smash’ on a high backhand overhead is a misnomer.

‘Why so?’

the word ‘smash’ implies power to the point of breakage

the word smash also gives the impression that you are giving something… well, you’re giving something an almighty smash.

With a full overhead throwing action, the shot can live up to the terminology – a thown racket head fuels the hardest shots in tennis – it truly is (or can be) a smash, as seen in this side-view of the Pete Sampras overhead (which also includes two free-running animations in 9 & 10).
